The Journey of DJ ICEMO CONCEPT

The Hustle Started with Vibes and Borrowed Gear

I began DJing out of pure love for music and that electric feeling when a crowd goes crazy. But the beginning was full hustle mode! I was borrowing DJ controllers, practicing in friends’ living rooms (their neighbors definitely hated me), and playing free sets just so people could hear what I could do.

I’d juggle small gigs at night and spend days learning through YouTube tutorials. No fancy stages, no “DJ life” aesthetic, just me, borrowed equipment, my friend’s living room, and a dream that wouldn’t stay quiet.

My First Wedding Gig Was ₦5k and a Plate of Jollof

My first wedding paid me ₦5,000 and a plate of jollof rice. Yes, you read that right!

I sat in my room counting that cash like I’d closed a million-naira deal. Checking each note twice, three times, four times. My roommate thought I’d lost my mind, but I didn’t care! That tiny envelope was PROOF that people would actually pay me to do what I loved.

And that jollof? Ah, it tasted different that day! Like the universe was saying, “Here’s your payment plus a delicious bonus!” I remember thinking, “So I can eat good food AND get paid for music? Where do I sign up for life?”

The Night Everything Went Silent

There was a night I almost quit. Everything was going fine at a wedding the crowd was vibing, people were shouting “DJ turn it up!” then suddenly… sound went off. Just like that. Dead silence. The whole hall turned and looked at me like, “DJ, what’s going on?” I won’t lie, my heart skipped two beats.

In that moment, I started questioning everything, my setup, my skills, even my calling. I managed to fix it and finish strong, but that night humbled me. When I got home, I didn’t sleep. I just sat there thinking, “This can never happen to me again.” That was the night I upgraded my gear, my mindset, and my backup plans. Because in this business, you can’t be caught unprepared.

Sometimes your biggest disasters become your best teachers!

The Instagram Review That Changed Everything

Things began to shift after one particular bride hyped me on Instagram. She posted a heartfelt review, tagged her friends, and just like that, the bookings started rolling in. One referral became two, two became four, and before I knew it, I was getting back-to-back inquiries.

That’s when I decided to brand it properly, DJ ICEMO CONCEPT. No more playing like a random neighborhood DJ. I became intentional about my sound, my presentation, and my client experience. From there, it stopped feeling like a hustle and started feeling like purpose.

That bride taught me: one satisfied client with a loud voice on social media is worth more than any paid ad!

The Mother-Son Dance That Broke Everyone

There was this wedding, an emotional one. During the mother-son dance, the groom surprised his mum with her favorite old-school jam. I could see tears in her eyes. Before long, the whole hall was singing along. Even we vendors had goosebumps. I added a smooth transition, layered it perfectly, and the vibe just lifted the roof.

That’s when I realized something powerful. I’m not just the guy playing songs, I’m creating memories, building soundtracks to people’s most important moments.

From borrowing controllers to building DJ ICEMO CONCEPT, here’s what I learned:

Your beginning doesn’t define your ending. Equipment will fail, but preparation saves you. One satisfied client creates endless marketing. The money is good, but moments are priceless. Consistency beats talent every time.

Just don’t quit before before your breakthrough comes. And always, ALWAYS have a backup plan!
