How a Passion Project Became My Entire Life

You know how some people stumble into their purpose by accident? That was me. I started Benue Weddings with one simple goal: to help vendors gain visibility and connect couples with the right people.

But something happened along the way. As I connected vendors with couples and watched these beautiful events come together, I felt something stirring inside me. It was more than just satisfaction; it was a zeal. I found myself getting excited about seating arrangements and how to make ceremony backdrops more stunning. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a side project anymore. This was my calling.

So I decided to take classes. I sharpened my skills. I learned the difference between taupe and beige (yes, there’s a difference, and yes, it matters). I started with practically nothing. No fancy equipment, no big budget, no rich uncle to sponsor my dreams. Just passion, creativity, and the kind of determination that makes you say “I go make am” even when your bank account is laughing at you.

The Wedding Where My Payment Was Fulfillment

My very first wedding as a coordinator and planner? I did it completely for free.

Before you start rolling your eyes at me and wondering why I was doing charity work, let me explain. At that point, it wasn’t about the money, I just needed to prove to myself that I could actually do this thing.

That day, as the bride walked in, everything went so smoothly that even I was shocked. The décor was perfect, the timing was sharp, and the couple was glowing. Watching it all come together gave me a joy no alert could match.

I remember going home that night thinking, “Ehn ehn, so this is what fulfillment feels like.”

When Doubt Came Knocking

But it wasn’t always rosy o. There was a time when bookings were scarce. Nobody was calling. Nobody was booking. Just crickets and my own thoughts.

That’s when doubt started creeping in. I started asking myself, “Do people even value event planning?” “Am I good enough?” “Should I just go and learn a trade?”

But deep down, I knew this was my lane. So I took that quiet season as my refining season. I went back to prayer, took online classes, polished my brand, and reminded myself why I started. I realized that even when people don’t see you, God is still preparing something behind the scenes.

The Client Who Changed Everything

The shift came in the most unexpected way.

One day, a client I had worked with casually dropped a long appreciation post on Instagram. I didn’t even know she was going to do that! She tagged Benue Weddings and praised the coordination, attention to detail, and how stress-free the whole process was.

Before I could even say “Amen,” the DMs started entering one by one. People were messaging me like, “Hi, are you available for next month?” and “Please, we saw your work on Instagram!”

That one post opened doors. And in that moment, I realized something powerful that sometimes, all you need is one person to speak your name in the right room.

The Bride Who Made Me Remember My Why

There’s one wedding that will forever stay with me.

The bride walked into the reception hall and just froze. Then, she started crying, not the “ugly heartbreak” kind of tears o, but pure joy. She kept saying, “This is beyond what I imagined.”

I just stood there, trying not to cry too. Because in that moment, everything made sense, the free jobs, the quiet seasons, the doubts, the hustle. It all led to that one moment where someone’s dream became real because of my work.

That’s when I knew Benue Weddings wasn’t just about décor or vendors. It was about creating memories that would live forever.

If you’re still in your “hustle season,” don’t despise it. Your passion will pave the way, your consistency will build the bridge, and one day, your work will speak louder than any marketing campaign.
