When Hustle Met Determination
Let me tell you how this whole thing started, and no, it wasn’t some fancy “I had a vision board and manifestation journal” type of story. I was broke, like broke broke. But you see, even in that struggle, I knew something deep down: I had a gift for creating beautiful, memorable experiences.
So there I was, with no money and barely any resources, but dreams bigger than Eko Hotel’s event hall, just me, my determination, and a heart that was too stubborn to quit. I stayed up late at night, watching YouTube videos, practicing setups in my imagination because I couldn’t afford the real materials yet.
Every tiny opportunity that came my way, I grabbed it like it was the last piece of meat in the soup. I had to prove to myself, and to the world, that I was meant for this.

The ₦5,000 That Changed My Life
My very first wedding job was a small décor setup. When the client handed me ₦5,000, I felt like I had just collected a million dollars in cash.
I know what you’re thinking, “₦5,000? That’s not money!” But to me, that money wasn’t just money. It was validation. It was someone looking at my work and saying, “Yes, this girl sabi her thing.” It was proof that my creativity had value, that someone actually trusted me enough to be part of their special day.
That ₦5,000 did something to my spirit. It gave me the audacity to dream bigger, to believe I could do more. That’s when I started thinking, “Why stop at just décor?” And that’s how I expanded into running an ushering agency. If I could make people’s events beautiful, why not make sure they were also well-coordinated? Why not support my clients more fully? That small payment opened my eyes to possibilities I hadn’t even considered before.

The Moment I Almost Quit
Let’s be real, this industry will test your patience and your faith. There was a time when clients would price me like they were buying tomatoes in the market. “Ah ahn, madam, is it not just balloon and flowers?” they’d say.
One particular day, after a long meeting of bargaining that ended with, “We’ll get back to you,” I went home, sat on my bed, and cried. I was tired. I felt invisible.
But every time I thought about quitting, I’d remember how I felt seeing a couple smile because of my work, that joy of transforming a plain hall into something magical. That was my drive. So I told myself, “Omo, giving up is not an option. You go still blow.”
When Things Finally Started to Turn Around
The shift came when I least expected it. I got this one client, and honestly, they were different from day one. Not only did they appreciate my work, but they also became my unofficial marketing team. This person was hyping me to everyone like I had paid them commission. “You need to see what JNLCreative did at my event!” “Have you talked to JNL? They’re amazing!” “Let me connect you with my event planner!”
Then referrals started rolling in. My phone was buzzing with inquiries for both event planning and ushering services. I remember looking at my DMs one day, and I just started laughing in disbelief. This wasn’t just a hustle anymore; this was becoming a real brand. JNLCreative was no longer just a name; it was a reputation.
That’s when I realized something powerful: sometimes all you need is one person who believes in you enough to tell others. That client didn’t just give me business; they gave me momentum.

That Was How The Light Went Off During The Reception
There’s one wedding I’ll never forget. Everything was going smoothly, music, dancing, food, when all of a sudden, NEPA took light, and the generator packed up. Everywhere went dark.
In Nigeria, when the lights go off at an event, panic is usually next in line. I could see people reaching for their phones, hear the murmurs starting. But something in me refused to let this moment become a disaster. This was someone’s special day.
So, we did something spontaneous and, honestly, a bit crazy. We turned on our phone flashlights, lit candles, and the couple swayed in the middle of this sea of light. Before long, the whole hall had this soft, romantic glow. After the event, the bride told me that was her favourite part of the entire day.
Can you imagine? What could’ve been a disaster turned into the highlight of the day! That night taught me one big lesson: in this business, creativity can turn chaos into magic.

Looking back now, from that first ₦5,000 to where JNLCreative stands today, I’m grateful for every moment, even the hard ones. The broke days taught me to be resourceful. The clients who priced me down taught me to know my worth. The victories taught me to keep pushing.
And to anyone reading this who’s in their own struggle season, feeling like giving up, wondering if their dreams are too big or their resources too small, keep going. Your breakthrough is closer than you think.
