The ‘Weds & More Events’ Story

You know those “overnight success” stories? Yeah, this isn’t one of them.
This is about grit, late nights, a free training that turned into a career, and one unforgettable moment where a bride’s smile proved the hustle was worth it.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t wake up one morning dreaming about weddings and event décor.
After completing my NYSC in 2016, I secured a job in 2017 as an administrative officer at a large event management company in Abuja. At the time, my focus was on my admin role and the small event staffing agency I had started in October 2018. But life has a funny way of redirecting our paths, doesn’t it?
In 2019, something magical happened. My boss, a woman who could take a client’s most chaotic Pinterest board and scattered WhatsApp voice notes and somehow weave them into pure wedding gold, started an Event Planning Academy. I had always admired how she could take a client’s scattered ideas and turn them into something exquisite and seamless. So when she offered to let me join the training for free, I didn’t just say yes, I threw my whole heart into it. Those early days were filled with late nights, event planning books, endless YouTube tutorials, and the kind of dedication that comes from knowing you’ve found your calling.
The Wedding That Changed Everything (And Paid Nothing)

Here’s where my story gets beautifully ironic. My very first wedding gig? Completely free. A friend needed help, and I stepped up with nothing but enthusiasm and a promise to call my boss whenever I felt lost. It turned out beautifully. The couple, their families, and guests were thrilled. They gave me souvenirs and so much appreciation that it boosted my confidence more than any paycheck could. I learnt in this season that sometimes the most valuable payment isn’t money, it’s the moment you realize you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
The Day I Almost Walked Away
But let me keep it real because every hustle story has that moment. That breaking point where you question everything. For me, it came during what should have been a routine coordination gig. Something went wrong (not my fault), but a guest didn’t care about fault lines. He was upset, and he made sure everyone knew it.
He shouted at me in front of everyone and even threatened to slap me. I felt so embarrassed and small at that moment. Walking away, I remember thinking, “Who sent me? Why am I even in this industry?”
We’ve all been there, right? That moment when impostor syndrome crashes the party and makes you wonder if you should just pack up and go home.
Fast forward to 2022. Plot twist of the century: my boss travelled abroad for six months and handed me, yes, ME, a complete wedding to plan. From scratch. For over 500 guests. No training wheels, no safety net, just pure trust. I sourced vendors, created budgets and timelines, managed the team, and ensured everything ran smoothly.
Looking back, there’s a moment that still sends shivers down my spine. During the reception, with everything flowing seamlessly and guests having the time of their lives, my boss joined via video call from thousands of miles away. When I showed her the fully decorated hall, vendors in perfect sync, and pure magic happening in real-time, her pride was unmistakable.
It was a full-circle moment for me: the trainee who once watched her in awe was now delivering at the same level.

Where I Am Today
Today, Weds and More Events isn’t just my business, it’s proof that sometimes the best journeys start with someone believing in you before you believe in yourself. Every scattered idea I transform into wedding magic, every timeline I craft, every vendor relationship I nurture, it’s all rooted in those late nights in 2019 when my boss saw potential and said, “Come learn for free.”
The hustle truly does pay, but sometimes it pays in ways you never expected: confidence, skill, purpose, and the indescribable joy of watching someone’s dream day unfold exactly as they imagined. Since then, I have planned and coordinated several events professionally, and each one reminds me why I’m grateful I didn’t walk away that day when I felt so small.

Ready to turn your scattered wedding ideas into something exquisite and seamless? At Weds and More Events, we’ve proven that with the right dedication, training, and heart, dreams don’t just come true; they become unforgettable experiences.
My hustle continues, and the payoff? Priceless.
